HiveDiary is a record of your hives. The records are yours. This page says what the app collects, where it goes, who else sees it, and how to take it back or delete it.
Who we are
HiveDiary is made by Brett Reisman. For anything on this page, write tosupport@hivediary.com.
What we collect
Only what the app needs to do its job. Everything below is tied to your account.
Your account
An email address, or an Apple ID if you sign in with Apple, and an account identifier. Sign-in is handled by Auth0, which stores your sign-in credentials on our behalf. We never see a password.
Your records
Everything you enter: yards, hives, parts, frames, inspections, notes, signs you tap, mite counts, treatments, feedings, splits, tasks, expenses, sales and receipts.
Photographs
Pictures you take of frames, parts and receipts, and what the app read from them.
Location
Where a yard is, if you pin it, and your position when you ask the app to sort yards by distance. Location is used only while the app is open. It is never collected in the background.
Your voice
If you dictate a note or talk to the assistant, the audio is transcribed and the text is kept as your note. The audio itself is not stored.
Subscription state
Whether you have HiveDiary Premium and when it renews. Payment is taken by Apple. We never see your card.
We run no advertising and no third-party analytics. The app does not track you across other apps or websites. There is no advertising identifier in it.
Why we collect it
To show your records back to you, to read comb from a photograph, to write up a visit, to remind you of a hive you left open, to tell you what your records say needs doing, and to know whether your subscription is active. Nothing here is used for any other purpose.
Where it goes
Your records and photographs are stored on servers we run on Amazon Web Services in the United States, encrypted in transit and at rest.
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with anyone for marketing. The only third parties that handle it are the services the app is built on, each for one purpose:
Auth0 handles sign-in and holds your email address for that purpose.
RevenueCat and Apple handle the subscription. They receive an account identifier and your purchase state, not your records.
AI services read your comb from a photograph, transcribe dictation, write up a visit from its entries, and answer the assistant. To do that, the relevant photograph, audio or records are sent to the AI provider for processing and are not used to train their models. This is the one case where your records leave our servers, and it happens only when you use those features.
Amazon Web Services stores everything and sends the emails.
We will hand over data if the law requires it, and we will tell you if we are allowed to.
How long we keep it
For as long as you have an account. Delete the account and everything goes with it, at once: every yard, hive, inspection, photograph and cost entry, and the account itself. There is no recovery period. Backups are overwritten within thirty days.
Your choices
Export. The Account screen exports every record as a file you keep. Any visit exports as a PDF.
Delete. The Account screen deletes your account and all of its data from inside the app. Deleting the account does not cancel a subscription; cancel that in your Apple ID settings.
Permissions. Camera, photo library, microphone, location and notifications are each asked for when first needed and can be turned off in your phone's Settings. The app works without them; the features that need them do not.
Ask. Write to us for a copy of your data, a correction, or to have it deleted without using the app.
Children
HiveDiary is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
When this page changes, the date at the top changes with it. If a change means we collect something new, the app will tell you before it does.
